Two Packers Could Face Charges

From Associated Press

Green Bay Packer wide receivers Antonio Freeman and Charles Jordan could face charges stemming from an investigation into a car accident in which a woman was injured, according to sheriff’s officers.

Freeman and Jordan could face charges of obstructing officers by allegedly switching vehicles after Freeman ran his vehicle into a light pole, Lt. Scott Semb of the Brown County (Wis). Sheriff’s Department said Friday.

Semb said Friday that the matter was still under investigation by the sheriff’s department and the case had not yet been forwarded to the Brown County District Attorney’s office.

An obstructing charge could be filed as a local ordinance violation carrying a fine of about $640 or as a state charge carrying up to a nine-month jail term and $10,000 fine.

Semb also said Friday that possible charges could include failure to report an accident against Freeman and falsifying an accident report against Jordan.

Receiver Jerry Rice still wants to play for the San Francisco 49ers, but salary-cap and personnel issues may take the option out of his hands.

“I never thought I’d be in this predicament, but here I am,” Rice said. “I think I’m looking at it with a very positive attitude and I’m working hard during practices and I’m just trying to make the team for next year.”

Rice will play the 15th home finale of his career Sunday night against the Washington Redskins. And 49er General Manager Bill Walsh told the Contra Costa Times that fans should not assume there will be a 16th.

“I really hope they account for the fact that it’s not for certain that he’ll play next year and that they’ll respond accordingly,” Walsh said.

Rice, 37, leads the 49ers with 56 receptions and five touchdowns this season, though he is averaging a career-low 11.5 yards a catch.
