All Aboard
I most enjoyed the recent letter (“Train Versus Plane,†Nov. 28) in the Travel section and noting what a pleasant surprise it was for the writer. Because of my dislike for flying, I stopped traveling by plane in 1974 and started taking the newly organized Amtrak. After 25 years of traveling in the U.S. exclusively by train, I have found it to be the most relaxing and comfortable way to travel. From the attendant taking your bags to having your bed made up for you, the very adequate meals and the movies in the lounge car--it is a wonderful time to just sit back and relax.
In contrast, I have often been told by friends how wonderful the trains in Europe are. Two years ago I flew to Europe and had the opportunity to take several train trips. I can only say that the trips were sans anyone helping you know what car you are in or helping with your bags.

Missing from the Guidebook with the Kartchner Caverns article (“Arizona’s Deep, Dark Secret,†Nov. 14) was the option to travel to Tucson via Amtrak. The Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle depart L.A. at 9:55 p.m., arriving in Tucson at 8:35 the next morning.. A sunrise breakfast in the dining car is a civilized start to a day of exploration.
