Man Dies as Car Hits Oncoming Vehicle
A man was killed late Monday when the car in which he was riding swerved into oncoming traffic and collided with a car going the opposite direction on Avenida de Las Flores in Rancho Santa Margarita, authorities said.
Stephen Anthony Castaneda, 27, died after being thrown from a Honda Civic being driven at high speed by a 17-year-old who police believe had been drinking. The teenager, also thrown from the car, was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo with major head injuries.
The occupants of the other vehicle received only minor injuries, investigators said.
“It was a pretty horrendous crash,†said Bruce Lian, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.
