Longtime Palestinian Prisoner Released

Israel released its longest-serving Palestinian prisoner from jail. Khalil Saadi Raei, 45, a member of Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat’s Fatah movement, had served 25 years of a life sentence for the murder of an Israeli police officer, a prisons’ spokeswoman said. Palestinians had long demanded his freedom, but the Palestinian minister of state for prisoner affairs, Hisham Abdel Razek, said the release was unrelated to current negotiations with Israel over prisoners.
