* The Wimbledon champion and Newport Beach resident defends her title in the Acura Classic, which starts Monday at the Manhattan Country Club in Manhattan Beach.
Greeting the Day: I have two dogs that I take for about a 40-minute run every morning--a Rottweiler and a pit bull. I know that sounds really bad, but they’re really sweet, if you can believe that. I run in the Back Bay, which is an ecological preserve here.
Taking It Easy: I love to go to the beach, which is why I live here. I ride my bike and take the Balboa Ferry over to the beach. I don’t really body surf or surf or anything like that, but I do go in the water. But I mostly lay out. It’s kind of relaxing when you’re always traveling and stressed.
Trip to the City: If I have a free day, which is rare, I love to go up and walk around in Beverly Hills. It’s such a different way of life from Newport Beach. The prices are ridiculous, so I don’t buy much, but I like to walk around and people-watch. I look at some of the prices and go, “Oh, my God, you cannot pay that much for that,” but it’s fun just to be around that atmosphere.
Target Destination: Barney’s is my favorite store, but they closed the one in Orange County, so that’s another reason to make it up to Beverly Hills. I buy clothes, I buy makeup, I buy shoes. They have everything. It’s a great store, so I try to make time to get up there. If I have a chance, I eat at the restaurant there, Barney Greengrass. I love the Cobb salad, with the dressing on the side.
Closer to Home: Probably my favorite restaurant in Newport Beach is Cowboy. It’s relatively new--maybe seven or eight months--so it’s still pretty popular. It has a nice atmosphere and the food’s very good. The salmon is great. That’s where a lot of my friends like to go, so I usually end up joining them there.
Look Out, LPGA: I’ve recently picked up golf, and when I have a few hours free on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon I’ll go to the driving range and see what I can do. I’m terrible, but so many tennis players love to play golf and my dad, sister and brother-in-law live on a golf course and they’re all golf nuts, so everyone has kind of talked me into it.
