Owens Leads Fullerton to Victory Over UCLA
Ryan Owens hit two home runs as Cal State Fullerton won its eighth consecutive game, defeating UCLA, 11-10, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at UCLA.
The Titans (38-8) scored five runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take a 7-0 lead. The Bruins (24-25), whose three-game winning streak was halted by Fullerton, answered with a run in the third and three more in the fourth.
Kirk Saarloos, who entered the game for Barry Hawkins in the seventh inning, retired UCLA in the ninth to earn his fifth save. Starting pitcher Marco Hanlon (4-0), who gave up one earned run through the first four innings, got the victory.
David Bacani also homered for the Titans and Reed Johnson, Aaron Rifkin and Chris Stringfellow each had two hits.
Former University High standout Garrett Atkins had three hits, including his 13th home run of the season, to extend his hitting streak to 15 games for the Bruins. Teammate Chase Utley also hit safely for the 15th consecutive game.
In other nonconference baseball:
Chapman 12, La Verne 5--Adam Olow hit two home runs and had five RBIs for visiting Chapman (33-2). Eric Albright went three for five with two doubles and one triple and three RBIs for Chapman. Teammate Scott Montgomery also had three hits, including one double and two RBIs. Russell Riehl hit a grand slam for La Verne (25-15) in the seventh inning.
