Northridge Holds Off Cal Lutheran

Jim DeBiase gave up six hits and struck out 10 in eight innings, and Mike Frick earned his first save to help Cal State Northridge defeat Cal Lutheran, 4-3, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Northridge.

DeBiase (8-4) exited after allowing two runs in the eighth inning that cut the Matadors’ lead to 4-2. Andy Davidson started the ninth and yielded to Frick, who recorded the last two outs.

Kevin Patrick and Jeremy Sickles each had two hits to pace a nine-hit attack for Northridge (23-26). Sickles drove in two runs.

Tom Canale (8-4) pitched 5 1/3 innings for Cal Lutheran (26-10), giving up seven hits and four earned runs.

Brad Smith hit his 12th home run and Jeremy Schlosser had two doubles and drove in a run for the Kingsmen.

In other baseball games:

Ventura 4, Oxnard 1--David Arroyo (4-3) pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks for the Pirates (20-16, 10-10) in a Western State Conference Northern Division game at Ventura.

Arroyo hit a run-scoring double in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. He scored on Ricky Helland’s single.

Oxnard is 16-20, 7-13.

Valley 2, Pierce 1--Sigi Arroyo hit a run-scoring double in the first and Kevin O’Hara homered in the third to lift the Monarchs in a WSC Southern Division game at Pierce.

Alberto Flores and Sal Trujillo combined on an eight-hitter for Valley (14-23, 8-12).

Traviss Hodge pitched a complete game and had two hits for Pierce (20-14, 10-10).

Hancock 6, Moorpark 5--Brandon Voorhees had three hits and drove in a run for the Raiders in a WSC Northern Division game at Hancock.

Joe Tillmon added two hits for Moorpark (23-16, 12-8).

SOFTBALL

Canyons 17, Glendale 1--Jennifer Rennie had four hits and four runs batted in, and Andrea Wintermute had two hits and four RBIs for the Cougars in a WSC Southern Division game at Glendale.

Kelly Presten (12-4) of Canyons pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks. She allowed a run in the first inning on singles to Kim Latina and Danielle Peters.
