Romar Wins Title With Extra Work for Birmingham
Keith Romar of Birmingham High won the City 6-A League individual golf championship on the first extra hole Tuesday in a playoff over Tommy Mansuwan of El Camino Real Buenaventura Golf Course in Ventura.
Romar and Mansuwan each finished at one-over par 73 to edge Scott Bashin of Birmingham, who shot a 74.
Romar had three birdies and four bogeys to win the league championship for the second consecutive year. He was so excited afterward that he went to a golf course near his home in the Valley to hit a bucket of balls.
Romar and Bashin helped Birmingham win the team title with a score of 396. Granada Hills was second at 402.
Romar’s performance stamps him as one of the favorites for the City championship May 14 and 17 at Wilson-Harding Golf Course.

Notre Dame 191, Chaminade 205--Adam Kaye shot a one-under par 35 for the Knights (11-4, 9-2) in a Mission League match at Porter Valley Country Club.
BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD
Newbury Park 76, Thousand Oaks 58--Patrick Dolan won the 400 meters in 52.0, the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.0 and the long jump in 20-0 for host Newbury Park in a Marmonte League meet.
Will Svitek won the shotput in 52-4 1/2 and the discus in 155-2 for the defending league-champion Panthers (8-1, 6-0), who went undefeated in league dual- and tri-meets for the second consecutive season.
GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD
Thousand Oaks 79, Newbury Park 52--Erin Brzezinski won the 100 in 12.8, the 200 in 27.1 and the long jump in 16-7 1/2 for the victorious Lancers in a Marmonte League meet at Newbury Park.
Amanda Armstrong won the 800 in 2:24.1 and the 1,600 in 5:27.2 for Thousand Oaks.
BOYS’ TENNIS
St. Bonaventure 11, Oak Park 7--Sean Callaghan and Todd Kinsling lost only one game while improving to 27-0 at No. 1 doubles for St. Bonaventure (9-2, 6-0) in a Tri-Valley League match at Oak Park (5-8, 4-2).
Calabasas 13, Malibu 5--Nick Weiss swept at No. 2 singles for the Coyotes (10-8, 4-0) in a Frontier League match at Malibu.
Calabasas clinched the league title with a victory Thursday against Santa Paula.
Camarillo 16, Oxnard 2--No. 2 player Andrew Gold and No. 3 Quoc Ly each swept three sets for host Camarillo (12-5, 5-1) in a Pacific View League match.
Burbank 15, Valencia 3--Sophomore Tigran Martiroysan won all three of his singles sets to improve his season record to 46-2 and the Bulldogs (13-3, 7-0) won a Foothill League match at Valencia.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Grant def. Poly, 15-13, 15-12, 7-15, 4-15, 15-11--Ryan Diaz had 20 kills and Robert Kelly recorded five of his 11 kills in the fifth game for visiting Grant (8-2, 8-2), which earned a share of the East Valley League title with Poly.
Billy Cuevas had 23 kills for Poly (11-2, 8-2).
Monroe def. Reseda, 15-1, 15-1, 15-1--Jose Sanchez had six kills for Monroe (13-0, 10-0), ranked No. 4 in the region by The Times.
