James F. Glass misses the point when he takes to task Roger Schlickeisen for complaining about Congress weakening the environmental laws (letter, Sept. 23).
The point he misses is that “more regulations, higher costs and higher taxes” are fair and reasonable ways to protect the environment. If someone conducts an activity that hurts the environment, then he should pay the full costs imposed by legislation or regulations, an equitable way to see that the full costs are paid by the polluter.
Take an example of someone dumping toxics into a stream. Shouldn’t the polluter pay the cost of cleaning up his mess?
