Calvary Chapel 24, Laguna Beach 13--Calvary Chapel rallied to score twice in the second half to defeat visiting Laguna Beach at Westminster High School.
Calvary Chapel’s Jeff Smith scored two touchdowns, one running and one receiving, to lead the Eagles. He hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Short in the second quarter, giving Calvary Chapel a 12-6 lead at halftime. His second touchdown came on a two-yard run in the third quarter that put the Eagles back in front for good, 18-13.
La Quinta 23, Alhambra Mark Keppel 0--Jose Pena scored two touchdowns, his first one on a 47-yard reception in the first quarter, to lead La Quinta. He also made a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Hai Duyen Nguyen scored on an 18-yard run in the second quarter. La Quinta opened the season 2-0 for the first time since 1989.
