Top-Ranked Sailors Blow Past Mater Dei
Newport Harbor, top-ranked in the state’s preseason girls’ volleyball poll, defeated fourth-ranked Mater Dei, 15-5, 15-7, 15-8, in a nonleague match Wednesday at Mater Dei.
Junior April Ross had 11 kills and senior setter Jennifer Carey had 32 assists, four kills and seven digs for Newport Harbor (2-0). The Sailors won the Southern Section Division I-AA championship last season.
Mater Dei (0-1) played without team captain Lauren Warner. The senior outside hitter suffered a back injury and could be out for the season, Mater Dei Coach Ron Cheser said.
Mater Dei reached the section Division I-A final last season, but lost to Marina, the eventual state Division I champion.
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Fullerton 3, Canyon 0--Lauren Duggins had 15 kills and Nicole Monk had eight aces to lead Fullerton (2-0) to a 15-8, 15-9, 15-7 victory.
Laguna Hills 3, Troy 2--Lori Steele had 14 kills and Kelly Anderson 13, in the 15-11, 13-15, 15-10, 15-17, 15-4 victory for visiting Laguna Hills (2-0). Troy is 1-3.
Los Alamitos 3, Pacifica 1--Bridget Merritt had 11 kills for visiting Los Alamitos (3-0), which won, 15-8, 15-4, 9-15, 15-4. Toria Auelua had seven kills for Pacifica (1-2).
Villa Park 3, Garden Grove 0--Tiffany Wood had eight kills and Jessica Koopman had 24 assists to lead host Villa Park (2-0) in the 15-2, 15-4, 15-3 victory. Garden Grove is 0-2.
At the Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World Invitational boys’ cross-country meet:
Orange Lutheran finishes third--Brian Stemmeier won the three-mile race in 17 minutes for Rim of the World. Riverside Norte Vista won the team competition with 56 points, edging Rim of the World by one.
Derek Bartlett (17:34) finished fourth and Taylor Gavin (17:47) was sixth for Orange Lutheran, which had 82 points.
In Orange League girls’ golf:
Valencia 118, Rosary 123--Junior Nikki Glowin shot three-over 33 at Brea for host Valencia (2-0, 1-0). Maggie Barnett shot 36 for Rosary (1-1, 0-1).
In nonleague girls’ golf:
Corona del Mar 151, Villa Park 152--Shelly Raworth shot a four-over 40 for Villa Park (0-3) at Green River.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Cypress 16, Magnolia 5--Gunjan Nanda won her singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with Jenna Black to win in doubles, 6-2, for host Cypress (3-0). Black won her singles sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Fullerton 10, Katella 8--Fullerton’s Lena Ross and Megan Gonsior beat Gaby Gomez and Nada Nabulsi, 7-6, in the final set to give the visiting Indians the victory. Senior Annie Bethancourt swept in singles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, for Fullerton.
La Habra 15, Los Altos 3--Kristin Coffey and Kristy Steel improved to 9-0 by sweeping their doubles sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, for La Habra (3-0).
Laguna Hills 13, Edison 5--Freshman Tricia Lee won her singles sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Laguna Hills (2-0) to the victory over host Edison (0-3).
Mission Viejo 10, Irvine 8--Senior Bonnie Bachelor won, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0, in singles and junior Amanda Poynter won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, to lead host Mission Viejo (3-0).
Newport Harbor 13, Sunny Hills 5--Kristen Case and Megan Hawkins swept their doubles sets, 6-0, 7-5, 6-0, for Newport Harbor (2-0), which won eight of nine doubles sets.
St. Margaret’s 14, San Dieguito Academy 4--Tala Malas swept in singles, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2, for host St. Margaret’s (1-2).
San Clemente 11, Marina 7--Senior Sarah Melton teamed with her freshman sister Shawna to win in doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, for San Clemente (2-1). Marina is 0-2.
Troy 11, El Dorado 7--Freshman Veronica Fermin and junior Lori Judd won, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1, in doubles for Troy (4-0). El Dorado is 3-1.
Woodbridge 18, Laguna Beach 0--Adriana Hockicko swept in singles without losing a game for visiting Woodbridge (2-0). Evangelina Soriano swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, and Michelle Stiefel won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, for the Warriors.
In nonleague boys’ water polo:
Cypress 11, Estancia 5--Josh Atunez scored six goals for host Cypress (2-1), which led, 7-0, at halftime. Matt Thorpe scored three goals for Estancia.
Fountain Valley 20, Los Amigos 3--Brandon Dotts scored five goals and Kiff Crandall added four for Fountain Valley (1-0).
Pacifica 14, Santa Ana 8--Steve Rodermund scored six goals and Jay Campbell three for visiting Pacifica (1-0), which broke a 7-7 halftime tie with three consecutive third-quarter goals. Danny Serna scored three goals for Santa Ana (0-1).
