Spelling Program Planned in Centralia

Students in the Centralia School District will receive a minimum of 15 minutes of daily spelling instruction under a program starting this school year.
“The ability to spell correctly increases a person’s ability to communicate with clarity and fluency,” said Assistant Supt. of Instruction Bobbi Mahler. “We want every child in our district to have that fundamental skill.”
Students will be tested each week to track their progress.
The district’s spelling lists include words children use frequently when writing; basic words that will teach principles of phonics; content words related to lesson plans; and challenge words to expand reading, writing and vocabulary levels.
A committee of teachers and the assistant superintendent of instruction developed the program over the summer.
