1997 IN REVIEW

It was all Tustin and DeShaun Foster last season in the Golden West League. After dominating their nonleague opponents, the Tillers raced through league play, ending Servite’s stranglehold on the the league title and its three-year league undefeated streak.

Tustin, which won its first Golden West League title, outscored its opponents, 642-196. Foster scored 362 of those points.

Foster opened the season against Foothill with 214 yards and three touchdowns and just got better from there, dominating every team and breaking record after record.

He was the first county player to rush for 3,000 yards in one season (14 games, 10 regular season and four playoff) with 3,398. He scored a section record 59 touchdowns, blowing away the previous record of 47.

His worst game of the season was in the section semifinals, rushing for only 147 yards and one touchdown. Of course, it took a muddy field and pouring rain to slow him down.

In the title game against Santa Margarita, Foster’s 378 yards and six touchdowns weren’t enough as the Eagles won, 55-42.

For second-place Servite, many would think they limped through a 6-6 season, but Coach Larry Toner’s team faced stiff competition in Esperanza, Mater Dei, Tustin, Fountain Valley and Santa Margarita, all county top-10 teams.
