LLANO — An unidentified pilot died when his small experimental plane exploded in an open area near Boulder Canyon on Friday morning, a Federal Aviation Administration official said.
Los Angeles County firefighters said wreckage was strewn over a half-mile area and coroner’s officials said the body was not recognizable.
The identity of the victim had not been confirmed, authorities said.
The single-engine craft had taken off from Chino Municipal Airport at 7:10 a.m. It crashed on its way to Bakersfield Meadows Field Airport an hour later, said FAA spokesman Jerry Johnston.
It was not known whether the aircraft had exploded in the air or on impact with the ground.
The cause of the accident was still under investigation.
