Regarding the uproar in Berlin over the creation of the Holocaust monument, your article (“Berlin Memorial Mired in Politics,†Aug. 28) quotes Berlin Mayor Eberhard Diepgen as complaining that the monument will make Berlin “a city of memorials and repentance.†I see nothing wrong with memorials and repentance. The mayor’s attitude shows how clearly both are still needed.

* As a former Jewish resident of Berlin (I left in 1939), I am dismayed to read that Der Spiegel feels such a monument is “too much remembering,†and Berlin’s mayor said it is “too monumental.†Can any monument be too much to remind the German people and the world of the 6 million Jews who were killed? I had hoped that the Germans had changed over the years, but obviously they haven’t.
