Man Shot After Allegedly Pointing Gun at Deputies

Sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded a man early Monday after he allegedly pointed a loaded handgun at them in Lynwood, authorities said.

Daniel Velazquez, 22, was wounded in the right shoulder and left foot shortly after 1:30 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Carrie Stuart. Velazquez apparently did not fire his gun, and the deputies were not hurt, she said.

Velazquez was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition. He faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, Stuart said.

Two deputies saw Velazquez after hearing that a man with a gun was walking on Carlin Avenue near Long Beach Boulevard, Stuart said. The deputies ordered Velazquez to stop, but he refused and continued walking until he stopped in the driveway of a house on Carlin Avenue, she said.

Velazquez drew a revolver from his waistband and pointed it at the deputies, Stuart said. Both deputies fired several rounds at Velazquez, who was wounded twice but managed to run and hide.

The deputies found Velazquez under the house and arrested him, Stuart said. A loaded revolver was discovered near where he had been hiding, she said.
