Two Is Magic Number When Saddleback, Santa Ana Meet

Saddleback and Santa Ana, teams that each got their first victory last week, will try for two in a row when they meet at 1 p.m. today in a Mission Conference Central Division game at Santa Ana Stadium.

Saddleback (1-5, 1-0) features the strong running of freshman Julio Peraza but little else on offense. Peraza has 730 of the team’s 832 rushing yards and has scored four of the Gauchos’ eight touchdowns.

Santa Ana (1-5, 1-0) has a much more explosive offense thanks to the passing of Archie Lappin, who threw for a season-high 267 yards in a 38-7 victory over Fullerton last week.

Santa Ana also has a talented tailback in Camron King (539 yards) and a deep threat in wide receiver Rob Caston (31 catches for 442 yards).

Santa Ana will be honoring members of its 1940, 1941, and 1942 championships teams at halftime. Santa Ana was 30-1 over those three years and won national titles in 1940 and 1942.

In another Central Division game:

Fullerton (1-5, 0-1) vs. Golden West (0-6, 0-1), Orange Coast, 1 p.m.--Fullerton hopes to end a five-game losing streak and earn Coach Gene Murphy his 100th college victory. He has been stuck on 99 since the Hornets beat Orange Coast the first week of the season.

Fullerton is Golden West’s first opponent with a losing record this season.

In the Northern Division:

Pasadena (3-3, 0-1) at Orange Coast (3-3, 0-1), 7 p.m.--Orange Coast’s offensive line, which gave up nine sacks in a 51-14 loss to Cerritos last week, must improve. On the plus side, wide receiver Ivan Mercer caught eight passes for 77 yards and has 32 receptions for the season.
