In another Northwest Valley Conference game:
Cleveland 26, Birmingham 23--Eddie Whitaker threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to George Covington for the winning score with seven seconds to play at Cleveland.
With first and goal, Whitaker took a quick drop and fired a strike to Covington in the corner of the end zone.
John Wall’s 22-yard field goal gave Birmingham (1-7, 0-5) a 23-20 lead with 1:30 to play. Wall also made field goals of 30 and 42 yards, and missed from 46 and 47 yards, both wide left.
James Bethea of Cleveland (2-6, 1-4) rushed for touchdowns of 27 and 19 yards and returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown.
Bethea finished with 65 yards in 11 carries and intercepted a pass in the first quarter.
Whitaker completed seven of 16 passes for 95 yards.
Birmingham’s Howard Jones had a three-yard touchdown run and caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Matt Parra. Jones finished with 139 yards in 32 carries.
Birmingham was penalized 20 times for 157 yards. Cleveland had nine penalties for 115 yards.
