GOP Congress

Joseph Cooper (letter, Oct. 23) says that the Republicans have contempt for the public [when they say] the public was fooled by the president’s demagoguery into blaming the Republicans for the government shutdown. According to Cooper, the president saved us from the Republicans’ “vastly unpopular social programs.”
Cooper has it exactly backward. Republicans won the majority in the Congress because the public voted for them and their “vastly unpopular social programs”! When they tried to implement those concepts in the budget, the president stood in the way of the public. The Republicans did their jobs by presenting Clinton with a budget that incorporated Republican values and policies, voted for by the majority of Americans, and Clinton rejected them.
