Woodbridge Knocks Off Peninsula in Girls’ Tennis
Woodbridge defeated Palos Verdes Peninsula for the first time in girls’ tennis, winning 11-7 Wednesday at Peninsula.
The previously undefeated Panthers are top ranked in Division I.
Woodbridge (11-0), ranked second in the county and in Division I, was led by sophomore Susanna Lingman and junior Adriana Hockicko in singles. Lingman won 6-2, 6-0, 6-1 and Hockicko won 6-4, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Michelle Stiefel and Evangelina Soriano won 6-4, 7-6, 6-2 for the Warriors, who beat Corona del Mar, the county’s top-ranked team, on Tuesday.
In other nonleague girls’ tennis:
Brea Olinda 12, Rosary 6--Annie James and Nancy Lee won in doubles, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, to lead host Brea Olinda (12-3), ranked sixth in Division III. Kelly Scanlan won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, in singles for the Wildcats. Rosary (9-6) is ranked fifth in Division IV.
In Century League boys’ cross-country:
Santa Ana Valley 23, Foothill 37--Santa Ana Valley’s Victor Lopez won the three-mile race in 15 minutes 35 seconds at Centennial Park.
In Century League girls’ cross-country:
El Modena 18, Canyon 42--Christine Eckstadt won the race, leading El Modena (4-0) to its 29th consecutive league victory. Laurie Burns and Leaf Williams finished second and third for the Vanguards, ranked fourth in Division III on Canyon’s three-mile course. Canyon is 2-2.
In the Olympic League:
Orange Lutheran wins--Orange Lutheran won its 57th and 58th consecutive league victories, beating Cerritos Valley Christian, 18-50, and Ontario Christian, 20-40. Lindsay Kane finished second in 20:52 and teammate Laura Deen was fourth in 21:44 at Valley Christian.
In the South Coast League:
Capistrano Valley 28, Dana Hills 28 (Capistrano Valley wins on sixth runner)--Michelle Smith of Dana Hills (1-1-1) won the three-mile race in 18:20. Megan Tormul (18:55) finished second for Capistrano Valley (2-0-1).
In Golden West girls’ volleyball:
Rosary 3, Tustin 0--Rosary rallied from an 8-1 deficit in the first game and went on to a 15-13, 15-6, 15-6 sweep at home. Heather Pe served eight straight points to start the rally for Rosary and Angela Conley finished with six kills.
In Century League boys’ water polo:
Santa Ana Valley 12, Canyon 11--Fernando Garcia scored the game-winner for Santa Ana Valley and sparked the Falcons with three goals in the second quarter.
Theodoros Voutsinos also scored three goals for Santa Ana Valley (12-8, 1-1). Miquel Franco had nine saves for the Falcons.
In the Sea View League:
No. 8 Corona del Mar 5, Santa Margarita 3--Jason Palda scored three goals and David Fabian scored two to lead visiting Corona del Mar (7-9, 1-1). Ryan McDonell scored three for Santa Margarita (7-10, 0-2).
In the Sunset League:
No. 9 Los Alamitos 10, Esperanza 6--Defending league champion Los Alamitos took command early and had a 9-3 halftime lead. Sophomore Erik Geoffrey had four goals and Joe Getner three for the Griffins. Brian Ploessel had 12 saves for Los Alamitos.
