Mater Dei will be moving to the Angelus League in the Catholic Athletic Assn. next fall, so tonight’s game begins the Monarchs’ last swing through the South Coast League. San Clemente upset the Monarchs in 1995. (The only other Mater Dei loss to a South Coast League opponent was in 1992 to Dana Hills.) The Tritons lost their first two games but have roared back to win three in a row and move into the county’s top 10. San Clemente’s ground game has been very effective of late. The Tritons ran for 733 yards total in victories over Santa Margarita and Foothill.
