Woman Charged in Crash in Which Friend Died
A woman was in custody Monday on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after an accident in which a friend was killed, a California Highway Patrol officer said Monday.
Ginene Westfall, 41, of Los Angeles was arrested Sunday after the 5:50 p.m accident, which occurred on the transition road from the Marina Freeway to the northbound San Diego Freeway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Armando Clemente.
Mathew Jones, 41, of Palmdale died at the scene after his motorcycle ran off the road and crashed into a pole, a coroner’s spokesperson said.
Westfall was driving her car in the same direction as Jones, and both were speeding, said CHP Officer William McKenna.
“We don’t know exactly what happened but they knew each other. There was no contact between the vehicles,†Clemente said.
During the investigation of the accident, officers found a pipe bomb on the side of the road. Sheriff’s deputies disposed of the bomb, which was not related to the accident, Clemente said.
