CLU Honors Scholarship Recipients

* Cal Lutheran University recently honored the recipients of its 10 newly endowed scholarships and three new restricted scholarships.

The awards were presented at the annual Honors Day ceremony. Newly endowed scholarships and their Ventura County recipients include: Emory Family Science Scholarship: Kimberly Johnson of Moorpark; Esmay Family Scholarship: Joselyn Belkin of Simi Valley; William Randolph Hearst Endowment: Shellie Evans of Simi Valley and Kellie Stigile of Canyon Country; Everett Thoreson Endowed Scholarship: Michael McGill of Oxnard and Melissa Rider of Thousand Oaks.

Laird Davis Memorial Scholarship: Lawrence Rodriguez of Lompoc; Helen E. Heimarck Memorial Scholarship: Robin Pry of Paso Robles; Lundering Youth Leadership Scholarship: Madeline Inderbieten of Clovis and Elma Garrido of Los Angeles; Ruth and Thomas Maxwell International Scholarship: Samson Yuimb of Papua New Guinea; Senior Mentor Endowed Scholarship: Daniel Roschke of Houston, Texas; and Elizabeth Thompson Memorial Scholarship: Danielle Charest of Shoreview, Minn.

The new restricted scholarships and recipients include:

David Olson Memorial Scholarship: Erik Olson of Camarillo; Future Teachers Club Scholarship: Diane Scrofano of Thousand Oaks; and Pamela Rensch Memorial Scholarship: Frieda Vandenberg of Simi Valley.

County Museum Awards 6 Scholarships

* The Ventura County Museum of History and Art awarded six scholarships totaling $4,000 to art local students.

The scholarships are funded through the Bonita C. McFarland Trust, an endowment which funds art exhibitions, art purchases for the museum and scholarships.

The recipients were chosen on the basis of personal essays, examples of artwork and recommendations from teachers.

Scholarships of $750 each were awarded to Annette Elammer of Camarillo, who will be attending the University of Southern California; Eunsil Kim of Ventura, who will be attending Washington State University; Justin Murray of Thousand Oaks, who will enter the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla., in the fall; and Steven Starfas of Ventura, a student at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Two scholarships of $500 each were awarded to Catherine Gassaway of Oxnard, a senior at Rio Mesa High School who will be entering Ventura College in the fall; and Courtney Morris of Moorpark, who will attend Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles.

Meryl O’Connor of Thousand Oaks and Ian Ramsay of Ventura, both high school students, received honorable mention for the quality of their work and for their commitment to studying art.

Pediatrician Receives Care America Award

* Yale Doberne, a pediatrician with Family Health Care Medical Group in Simi Valley, received Care America’s 1998 Champion of Care and Service Award. The award recognizes individuals in the health care industry who “maintain a high standard of quality and professional ethics under the principle that patients come first.â€
