Anaheim City Council

Adult Businesses: Council members are holding a special meeting to consider the impact of sexually oriented businesses on the city. Anaheim is home to eight adult businesses. Last year, a task force including Councilmen Lou Lopez and Bob Zemel began examining issues regarding adult businesses.

Huntington Beach Planning Commission

School Permit: Commission members will decide whether to approve a permit that would allow Brethren Christian High School to move into long-vacant Gisler School, 21141 Strathmoor Lane. Brethren officials have been looking for a new home since earlier this year when the Anaheim Union High School District said it needed to reclaim the Cypress campus that Brethren has leased the last seven years.

The permit is the last step Brethren officials need to begin classes for about 500 students in the fall. The Huntington Beach City School District earlier this month approved a one-year, $120,000 lease agreement for Gisler School.

Laguna Hills City Council

Airport Plan: A consortium of South County cities will present the Millennium Plan, an alternative to the county’s airport proposal for the soon-to-close El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

The video presentation will touch on the highlights of the Millennium Plan, including the proposed arts and culture district, sports and entertainment complex and educational facilities.

Los Alamitos City Council

Bixby Development: City Council members will consider a second report about the proposed Bixby Ranch Towne Center development, just across city limits in Seal Beach. The controversial Seal Beach Boulevard project calls for a supermarket, recreation uses and a church. Los Alamitos council members have expressed concerns about the development drawing traffic to an already congested street.

Newport Beach City Council

Budget Plan: Council members will hold a public workshop to discuss the $88-million operating budget proposed for the 1998-99 fiscal year.

Revenue is expected to be down this year because of grants that ran out and one-time capital-improvement payments from developers in 1997-98. But spending also is expected to decrease.

Orange City Council

Budget Hearing: Council members will hold a public hearing on the $53.6-million budget proposed for the 1998-99 fiscal year.

Budget officials projected a boost in the city’s sales tax income, allowing a 3% increase over the 1997-98 budget year.

City officials plan to hire three new police officers and continue efforts to improve parks and streets. The budget also calls for a new communications and marketing department to help improve the city’s image.

Villa Park City Council

Suburban Shortcut: For many years, residents on Francisco and Vida drives have been concerned about speeding cars and reckless motorists. Many drivers use the neighborhood streets as a shortcut to main thoroughfares into Orange or other parts of Villa Park.

In response to complaints, the council will consider measures including restricting turning into and out of the tract of upscale homes, installing speed bumps, adding traffic control signs, increasing police enforcement and closing the neighborhood to through traffic.
