Re “2 Languages Are Better Than 1,†May 10.
I have always been under the impression that the purpose of bilingual education was to facilitate transition from a non-English / limited-English-speaking status to fluency in English for students with bare knowledge of the language. . . . However, according to the letters written to Valley Voices, I am now wondering why I haven’t allowed the wool to be pulled from my eyes much sooner. . . . Lo and behold, the real purpose of bilingual education must be to assure that Spanish-speaking students become proficient and fluent in Spanish first and English second!
Being bilingual or trilingual is an asset and a gift, but tax money should not be used to guarantee that this is an end result. . . . I will vote yes on Proposition 227 and hope that any new programs developed to replace bilingual education will produce adults who can communicate with the rest of the English-speaking population of this country.
