Loyola Marymount Knocks Off Stanford

STANFORD — Michael Schultz pitched a three-hitter as Loyola Marymount stunned Stanford, 6-2, Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA West Regional.
Anthony Angel drove in three runs for sixth-seeded Loyola Marymount (34-21-1). The Lions play Long Beach State, a 12-3 loser to North Carolina State, in the second round today.
Top-seeded Stanford (41-13-1) lost its fifth straight game and faces an elimination game today against Minnesota, which lost to Alabama, 8-2. It was the first time in seven regionals at Stanford that the Cardinal lost in the first round.
Schultz (9-2), a freshman right-hander, had a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings before Joe Borchard lined a single to right field. He finished with nine strikeouts and five walks.
It was Loyola Marymount’s first post-season victory since 1989.
North Carolina State ended Long Beach State’s 11-game winning streak with a 12-3 victory.
Long Beach State (37-21-1) had averaged 13.2 runs and batted .406 during the winning streak.
Scott Redfox, a sophomore second baseman from Canyon High, had two hits for Long Beach.
