In other second-round matches:
Burbank 10, Santa Barbara 8--Ben Martin, an exchange student from Germany, swept three sets at No. 1 singles and a victory by the No. 1 doubles team of Amil Avanes and Fred Parvinjah helped the Bulldogs defeat perennial power Santa Barbara in a Division II match at Santa Barbara.
With Burbank clinging to a 9-8 edge, Avanes and Parvinjah beat the Dons’ No. 2 team of T.J. Gamble and Marc Longpre, 6-1, to secure the victory and knock Santa Barbara (16-3) out of the playoffs before the quarterfinals for the first time since 1972. The Dons have won seven Southern Section championships.
Westlake 18, West Torrance 0--Darren Joe was perfect at No. 1 singles for host Westlake (18-0) in a Division II match at the North Ranch Tennis Club.
Harvard-Westlake 18, Rosemead 0--Freshman Chris Shepherd and sophomore David Frankel did not lose a game at No. 3 doubles for visiting Harvard-Westlake (19-3) in a Division III match.
Santa Maria St. Joseph 11, St. Bonaventure 7--Mike Marquez won two of three sets at No. 1 singles, but he and St. Bonaventure (14-1) both suffered their first losses of the season in a Division IV match at St. Bonaventure.
Campbell Hall 14, Webb 4--Campbell Hall played without No. 2 singles player Shant Vanerian, but Ross Erlich filled the void by sweeping three sets at No. 3 in the Division IV match at Webb.
Vanerian attended his grandmother’s funeral in Detroit, but the Vikings (16-3) won all nine singles sets.
Chaminade 12, Crespi 6--Alan Suzuki swept at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Chaminade (12-6) in a Division IV match at Braemar Country Club.
