Changing Times for L.A. Scenesters
Seems this has been a growth period in Clubsville in more ways than one: people, places and things shifting all about. For starters, there’s some positive fallout from the Billboard Live debacle--at least, some of the cool folks who worked there have cool plans in the wo’ks: B.L.’s former talent buyer and PR guy Greg Wadley is starting a new club on Saturdays, “Fast Times at Dragonflyâ€; it begins Saturday at Hollywood’s D-Fly, and Wadley and partner Dillon Jordan rounded up a pep squad, the Ridgemont High Cheerleaders (who are actually more “go-go†than “rah-rahâ€) and DJ AM’s spinning. . . . Tony Harris, Billboard’s erstwhile in-house promoter, has a big shindig scheduled for June 18. In time for the 15th anniversary of “Wild Style,†a rapper’s cineastic delight, Harris is inviting guests to the Hollywood Athletic Club, where they can see the film and enjoy a concert hosted by Fab Five Freddy and headlined by Grandmaster Flash. . . . L.A.’s finest 10-person ball of fire, Ozomatli, is scheduled to play tonight at Dragonfly. . . . And finally: Although clubs mourned the loss of seminal hipster Frank Sinatra, his lounge-cat spirit lives on and, you can be certain, his music will be heard through the jukejoints in Hollywood till they’re all shut down.
