4 Hurt as Car Strikes CHP Patrol Unit

A California Highway Patrol officer and three motorists were injured Sunday when the Cadillac in which the three were riding struck a CHP patrol car on the Antelope Valley Freeway, authorities said.

Officer Lee Elvert, 59, suffered minor to moderate injuries in the 10:50 a.m. crash on the northbound 14 Freeway, near Barrel Springs Road, CHP Officer Richard Perez said.

Elvert, a 27-year CHP veteran who works out of the Antelope Valley Station, was directing traffic around an earlier accident when the Cadillac, driven by Kenneth McPherson, 65, of Saugus, struck the patrol car, Perez said. McPherson had apparently failed to realize traffic was slowing, Perez said.

The patrol car hit Elvert, who was standing in front of his vehicle, Perez said. McPherson and his two passengers, William Long, 59, of Pasadena and Brad Donahue, 43, of Olympia, Wash., were also transported to Antelope Valley Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

McPherson was not cited in the accident, Perez said.
