Women don’t like their bodies. That’s not exactly a news flash. But you can overcome the hate-hate relationship you have with your body. It may take a little effort, but it’s worth it. Here’s how:
* Keep it moving. Exercise is key. But do it because it feels good, not as a dieting strategy.
* Give yourself a break. Hop off the scale and stop bad-mouthing yourself. Learn to look at yourself naked in a full-length mirror.
* Play up the positives. There’s a lot to like about you. Keep reminding yourself that there’s more to you than a dress size.
* Take a compliment. Don’t push away kind words with a knee-jerk response like, “You need to have your eyes checked.” Practice saying, “Thank you.”
* Pamper yourself. Indulge in sensual pleasures such as soaking in a hot tub or getting a massage.
* Wear what you like. If you like bright colors and eye-catching jewelry, wear them. Base your choices on your taste, not your size.
* Pick friends wisely. Associate with people who accept you as you are. Avoid put-down pals and people who are overly concerned with appearance.
* Take inventory. Notice the array of women’s shapes and sizes. We’re not a one-size-fits-all population.
* Give yourself time. You didn’t develop your negative body image overnight. Don’t expect an instant about-face.
