Space was empty, and man first reached into space with his ingenuity, in the form of rockets and satellites. Then manned flights brought courage and heroism into space. As the millennium approached, competing nations collaborated for mutual benefit on the MIR space station.
And now we have sent vivisectors into space (“Deaths of More Baby Rats on Shuttle Prompt Protest,” April 29). For the first time, man has gone into space purposely to inflict suffering and death on defenseless baby animals while thousands of doctors and compassionate individuals are agitating to end the practice here on Earth.
Unlike the Apollo missions, this Columbia mission represents one giant leap backward for mankind.
