Richardson, Lane Named Top Volleyball Players

Josh Richardson, a middle blocker on the Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team, and Golden West middle blocker Scott Land were named co-most valuable players of the Orange Empire Conference Tuesday.

Joining the two on the conference’s first team are Todd Clevinger and Casey Jennings from Golden West, Ryan Hiskey and Mark Pozsgai of OCC, Grossmont’s Scott Downey and San Diego Mesa’s Eli Pitman.

Selected to the second team were OCC’s Dave Spegon and Darin McBain, Golden West’s Brian Fox and Chris Komer, Irvine’s Valley’s Donald Chen, Mesa’s Fred Hays, Palomar’s Steve Kerrin and Grossmont’s Bryan Simons.

Grossmont’s Fred Featherstone was named conference coach of the year.

Fullerton High baseball Coach Marty Berson has announced his resignation, effective at the end of the season, to pursue other opportunities, Athletic Director Julian Smilowitz said.

Fullerton won the Freeway League title in 1996, Berson’s first season. Last year it finished fifth. This season, Fullerton is second in league and 12-7-1 overall.

Smilowitz also said boys’ water polo Coach Jeff Hohne has resigned, effective immediately. Hohne will remain at Fullerton as a teacher.

Calvary Chapel pitcher Mike Molina has decided to attend Chapman University, Eagle Coach Joe Walters said.

In six starts this season, Molina is 2-1 with a 1.96 earned-run average.

Larry Rodriguez of Brethren Christian has signed a letter of intent to wrestle for UC Davis, his father Larry said.

Rodriguez, a first-team Times Orange County selection at 125 pounds, finished seventh at state finals and fourth at Masters this season.

The Vigilantes minor league baseball team will have a minimum 65 games broadcasted by KPLS 830 AM radio this season, beginning with the home opener against Chico on May 23.
