Body of Man Found at Beach
VENTURA — The body of an unidentified man and an object that appeared to be a gun lying nearby were found Tuesday by a passerby on the beach at Surfer’s Knoll, across from the Ventura Harbor, according to police.
The dead man’s name was not released pending notification of relatives, which had not been done as of 9:30 p.m., according to the coroner’s office. The cause of death remained under investigation.
Half a dozen officers went to 1580 Spinnaker Drive about 5 p.m. after a man walking on the beach spotted the body under some brush, according to the Ventura Police Department.
A helicopter was used in an unsuccessful search of the area for about 30 minutes, before officers walking near a transients’ camp at the mouth of the Santa Clara River found the body about 6 p.m., authorities said.
The telephone call to police was made by a woman from Oak View, who said the man who found the body asked her to call authorities because he doesn’t speak English fluently.
The woman, who asked to not be identified, gave police the man’s license plate number. The woman said the man appeared to be upset by his discovery.
