Local Musicians Win Scholarships

Kaori Yoshihara, 19, has won the top prize in the piano division of the B. Douglas Sawtelle Music Scholarship Competition, sponsored by the Orange County Musicians’ Assn. Local No. 7 of the American Federation of Musicians.
Yoshihara, a student at Chapman University in Orange, won $800. Pianist Petra Miyashiro, 21, also a student at Chapman, won the $400 runner-up award.
Horn player Peggy Groves, 17, a graduate of El Dorado High School in Placentia, won the $800 first-place non-piano award. Trumpeter Dara Chapman, 17, a graduate of Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, won the $400 runner-up non-piano award. Saxophonist James Barrera, 21, a student at Cal State Long Beach, won the $250 honorable mention award.
Winners of the newly founded Jim Boggio Memorial Scholarship awards for jazz performance include drummer Nate Wood, 18, of Laguna Beach, $500; fluegelhorn player Shinsuke Kanda, 19, of Hope International University in Fullerton, $100; drummer Kevin Dooley, 18, a graduate of University High School in Irvine, $100 gift certificate; and trumpeter Eric Pruett, 17, a graduate of Los Alamitos High School, $50 gift certificate.
