Servite/Rosary, Santa Margarita Lead All-Sports

Santa Margarita has reclaimed the lead among large schools and Servite/Rosary the top spot among small schools after the winter sports season points were added up for the fifth annual Times Orange County All-Sports Award.

The schools finished atop their respective divisions last year and have moved on top again under a revised scoring format that awards points only for a team’s playoff participation and finish. The winners will be determined after point totals from the spring season are added to the fall and winter totals.

Santa Margarita, which trailed Newport Harbor by 24 points at the end of the fall season, took a 20-point lead on the strength of its boys’ basketball and boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, which each earned the maximum 20 points by winning Southern Section titles.

Capistrano Valley made the biggest jump in the large school division, which includes schools with enrollment figures greater than 1,300 for grades 10-12. The Cougars moved from 13th to fifth in the rankings by scoring 40 points. El Toro, which was unranked after the fall, scored 48 points in the winter to debut at No. 9.

Servite/Rosary, fourth after the fall, simply switched places with Corona del Mar, as the Sea Kings failed to qualify a single team to postseason play in the winter.

Calvary Chapel got its usual boost from its wrestling team, which won another section title, as well as from its boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, with each reaching section championship games before losing. The Eagles jumped from 11th to second in the small schools standings by scoring 56 points--second only to Santa Margarita’s 60.

In the revised format, points are awarded for winning a section title (20 points), finishing as runner-up (16), reaching the semifinals (12), the quarterfinals (8) and qualifying for the playoffs (4).

Because only one school from each league qualifies for the section’s wrestling team playoffs, four points were awarded to each school that finished second or third in its league.
