LeCocq’s Best-Laid Plans Turn Into a Long Test Drive

In an effort to make her team’s Fountain Valley tournament game Saturday, Chaminade pitcher Maureen LeCocq scheduled her Scholastic Assessment Test to be taken later in the day at nearby Mater Dei High in Santa Ana.

The Fountain Valley tournament was rained out, however, leaving LeCocq with only a long drive.

Add LeCocq: LeCocq, a star the past two seasons, is 1-4, but Chaminade Coach Steve Harrington insists there is no need to worry.

“Maureen LeCocq is the best pitcher in the state and I still believe she is going to lead us to a league championship,� he said of the junior right-hander.

VOLLEYBALL

Five is enough: The Verdugo Hills boys’ team was able to earn its first victory Friday despite playing with five players for more than half the match.

In a 15-7, 15-4, 15-11 Northern Conference victory over Wilson, Verdugo Hills--which has eight players--had only six available. One was at a funeral and the other was getting his driver’s license.

Middle Hitter Ivan Martinez sprained his left ankle when he landed on a teammate after a block while his team held a 4-1 advantage in the second game.

The Dons, who won their first home match in two years, had to give up the serve every time Martinez’s spot came up in the rotation.

Royal loss: Royal High lost to Fresno Bullard, 15-12, in the quarterfinals of the Dos Pueblos boys’ tournament Saturday at UC Santa Barbara. The Highlanders defeated Bullard, 15-8, 15-9, during pool play. Royal outside hitter Cam Dickson was selected to the all-tournament team.

Crespi defeated Newbury Park in the first round of the playoffs, but lost to San Marcos in the quarterfinals.
