There are several interesting connections between the 1966 NCAA final and tonight’s.
* Texas Western, later to become Texas El Paso, won that game. There has been no team from the Western Athletic Conference to make it back to the Final Four since, until this year’s Utes.
* To get to the final, Texas Western beat Utah.
* In that final, Texas Western beat Kentucky, same school Utah will play tonight.
* The coach at Texas Western back then, and now, is Don Haskins. One of the coaches Haskins’ is closest to is Majerus. Last fall, they had a huge celebration party for Haskins in El Paso. One of the main speakers was Majerus.
