Flood Victims’ Plane Crash-Lands; 28 Die

A Peruvian air force plane ferrying civilians rescued from flooding plunged into a shantytown, killing 28 civilian passengers as it went into a drainage canal only yards from hundreds of homes, authorities said. As many as 20 other passengers were injured, they said. The pilot narrowly avoided a much worse disaster by guiding his falling Antonov-32 over the populated area to crash-land in the canal running through the center of the shantytown near Piura, about 530 miles northwest of the capital, Lima. The plane’s five-member crew survived.
