Corona del Mar Edges No. 1 Santa Margarita in Golf
Max Wallick shot two-under 33 to help Corona del Mar upset defending Southern California Golf Assn. champion Santa Margarita, 197-200, in a Sea View League golf match Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club.
Brad Wegener shot 39 for the unranked Sea Kings (4-1, 1-0). Tom Osseck and Jimmy Pittenger each shot 39s to lead top-ranked Santa Margarita (0-1 in league), the defending league champion.
In another Sea View League match:
El Toro 200, No. 7 Irvine 204--Medalist Wade Jones shot one-under 35 for El Toro (7-0, 1-0) at El Toro Marine Base.
In the Pacific Coast League:
No. 3 University 189, Laguna Beach 240--Medalist Brian Sinay shot par 36 and Joe Chang shot one-over 37 for University (4-2, 1-0).
In the Orange League:
No. 6 Brea Olinda 198, Magnolia 247--Brad Sader shot par 36 at Imperial for host Brea Olinda (6-0, 1-0).
Valencia 212, Western 227--Medalist Dalen DeMary shot one-over 38 for host Valencia (2-1, 1-O) at Alta Vista Country Club.
In nonleague golf:
No. 5 Huntington Beach 195, No. 4 Sunny Hills 211--Mac Tedford shot one-over 37 to lead host Huntington Beach (3-1). Medalist Dusty Schmidt shot one-under 35 for Sunny Hills.
No. 9 Villa Park 410, El Dorado 418--Mark Hewlett shot a two-over 73 for Villa Park (3-1) at Green River’s Orange Course and Western Hills.
Foothill 186, Orange Lutheran 194--Medalist Nick Seymour shot three-under 32 at Willowick for Foothill.
In South Coast League girls’ swimming:
No. 5 Capistrano Valley 94, No. 10 Mater Dei 75--Amber Stachowski won the 200 freestyle (2:02.51), 100 freestyle (25.73) and swam the first leg of two winning relays for visiting Capistrano Valley (4-0, 1-0).
In the Sunset League:
No. 9 Los Alamitos 104, Esperanza 65--Elizabeth Klein won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.70) and also swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams for visiting Los Alamitos (4-0, 1-0).
Fountain Valley-Marina meet postponed--The meet was postponed and rescheduled for next Wednesday at Marina.
In Empire League boys’ tennis:
Cypress 12 1/2, El Dorado 8 1/2--Robert Giuliano and Don Park swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-2, for Cypress (7-3, 1-0). Park also won in singles, 6-3.
Kennedy 12, Katella 9--Martin Lu and Daniel Lee swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-3, for Kennedy (2-4, 1-0). Lee also won his singles match, 6-3.
In the Garden Grove League:
La Quinta 16, Bolsa Grande 2--Bruce Hoang and Richard Huynh swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, to improve to 12-3 for visiting La Quinta (4-2, 2-1).
In the Pacific Coast League:
No. 6 Aliso Niguel 14, Laguna Beach 4--Chris Kan swept in singles for Aliso Niguel (9-0, 2-0), 6-2, 6-0, 6-2.
In nonleague tennis:
No. 1 Corona del Mar 18, Villa Park 0--Curtis Ellmore won in singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, for Corona del Mar (7-0).
No. 7 Mission Viejo 14, El Toro 4--Eric Bachelor and Kareem Lorseydi swept in singles for visiting Mission Viejo (7-1), 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.
Capistrano Valley 11, Fountain Valley 7--Michael Nguyen improved to 23-1 after winning in singles, 6-0, 6-4, 6-1, for visiting Capistrano Valley (7-1). Capistrano Valley’s Chad Widtfeldt defeated Fountain Valley’s top singles player, Ming Li, 6-1, to give Capistrano Valley its 10th point.
Fullerton 12, Savanna 6--Junior Adam Lentz and senior Soren Clark swept in doubles for Fullerton (8-0), 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.
Sonora 11, Brea Olinda 7--Gabe Garcia and Greg Vecchione swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2, for host Sonora (8-0).
In nonleague boys’ volleyball:
No. 3 Laguna Beach 3, Capistrano Valley 1--Tyler Reynard had 19 kills and Aidan Leedom added 17 for the host Artists (3-1), who won, 15-9, 15-9, 16-18, 15-6.
No. 6 Irvine 3, Edison 1--Clay Carlson had 18 kills, 15 digs and four blocks for host Irvine (5-0), which won, 15-6, 15-7, 15-17, 15-8. Chris Van Reusen had 12 kills for Edison (1-3).
El Toro 3, Mission Viejo 1--Peter Day had 15 kills for host El Toro (4-1), which won, 5-15, 15-9, 15-7, 15-8.
Los Alamitos 3, Westminster 1--Matt Komer had 27 kills for Los Alamitos (6-1), which won, 15-7, 13-15, 15-6, 15-6.
Mater Dei 3, Aliso Niguel 1--Vince Pham had 16 kills and Jim Munoz had 55 assists for visiting Mater Dei (5-0), which won, 15-17, 15-10, 15-9, 15-3.
Servite 3, University 1--Eric Barnes had 17 kills for visiting Servite (5-1), which won, 14-16, 15-13, 15-8, 15-3. Matt Larson had nine blocks for University (5-5).
