A class of about 36 fourth-graders from St. John Eudes school gathered with their fathers at neighboring Mason Park on Tuesday for an afternoon of picnicking and sports activities including basketball, badminton, softball, a water-balloon toss and a three-legged sack race.

“It’s great because Dad takes time out of work, and for a couple of hours the kids feel special to spend time with their fathers in advance of Father’s Day,†said Sister Encarnacion Alvarez of the school.

She said she organized the event, known as “Lunch Playtime With Dad,†with the help of some of the children’s fathers, as a positive way to end the school year.

“The kids were very excited, very happy because Mom wasn’t there, the other kids [siblings] weren’t there,†said Alvarez. “It was just them and their fathers.â€
