Council Puts $529,125 Aside for Public Art
The City Council has agreed to spend $529,125 on public art in the 1998-99 fiscal year.
The spending is part of a city ordinance that requires officials to spend 2% of all funds set aside for large-scale public construction projects on public art. Recommendations for art projects come from city public art employees, the Public Art Commission, community members and others.
The recommendations call for the city to commission public art pieces for the E.P. Foster Library in downtown Ventura, the historic Casa de Anza building on Ventura Avenue, Grant Park above City Hall and the new transit center at the Buenaventura Mall.
The plan approved Monday also calls for the city to commission temporary public artworks for the thrice-annual ArtWalk event downtown.
The city also plans to begin a “Municipal Art Acquisition Program†that will look for the city to purchase works of “high artistic merit†and “artistic quality.â€
The acquired art will be showcased in the Third Floor Gallery at City Hall.
