5 Arrested in Sweep for Leads in Shooting
Sheriffs deputies searching for suspects in the July 16 shooting of a 3-year-old boy and his father raided 13 locations Thursday.
Five people were arrested on various charges, including illegal possession of narcotics and weapons. But it was not immediately clear whether any of those arrested were actually considered suspects in the shooting.
The “probation sweep,†was designed to turn up evidence for the shooting investigation, Deputy Steve Sciacca said. The Sheriff’s Department did not say how the 13 locations were chosen.
Andrew Monroy, the 3-year-old, is improving but remains in critical condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, said spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda.
Andrew and Thomas Simental, the boy’s 23-year-old father, were shot while driving on the Pomona Freeway. A bullet lodged in Andrew’s scalp, but did not enter his head. Simental was shot in both hands, but managed to drive to a nearby sheriff’s station.
The shooting is being investigated as a gang-related incident.
Last month, the Board of Supervisors offered a $5,000 award for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the assailant.
