Chansawangpuvana Is Making a Name for Himself

Mike Chansawangpuvana of Orange swept his matches Friday at the U.S. Junior National Badminton Championships, advancing in three divisions at the Orange County Badminton Club.
In the under-14 boys’ singles, Chansawangpuvana defeated Vincent Nguy of Maryland, 15-6, 15-7, to advance to the quarterfinals. In boys’ doubles, Chansawangpuvana and partner Nick Mangkalakiri defeated a team from New York, 15-2, 15-2, advancing to the third round. In mixed doubles, Chansawangpuvana teamed with Orange’s Panita Phongasavithas to beat a team from Maine, 15-8, 15-7.
In the under-19 girls’ doubles, Orange’s May Mangkalakiri and Arcadia’s Elie Wu advanced to the quarterfinals with a 15-5, 15-7 third-round victory over Manhattan Beach’s Jodie and Janae Mertens.
Garden Grove’s Rosie Pham and Tam Nguyen lost in the second round to Jay Bao and Alicia King of Diamond Bar, 15-12, 17-14, in the under-19 mixed doubles.
