Medical Center May Reopen After Review

A seismic review must be completed before the Westlake Medical Center can be reopened, a hospital official said.
Kris Carraway-Bowman, a spokeswoman for the center, said the review will take at least 60 to 90 days.
The Westlake facility was closed in 1996 for economic reasons after serving as a cancer specialty center.
Carraway-Bowman said officials at Columbia/HCA, the company that owns both the Los Robles and the Westlake medical centers, were conducting a health needs assessment survey for the area to determine possible uses for the Westlake Village facility.
“The needs can vary depending on the population, “ she said. “With more elderly there is a need for more intensive care units. With young families it’s maternity wards.”
Bowman said 90% of the paramedic calls in the Westlake Village area are non-emergency calls, such as sprained ankles, eye injuries, or bee stings.
“That would indicate the need for an urgent-care center, rather than a full-scale emergency room.”
For emergencies, residents are currently taken to either Los Robles or West Hills Regional Medical Center.
