NEWPORT BEACH — A man crossing Coast Highway died after he was struck by a van Saturday night, police said.
About 8:30 p.m., the man was walking north across the highway against the red light at Prospect Street, Newport Beach Police Lt. Mike Jackson said. The driver of a westbound car spotted him, slowed down and began honking his horn, but the driver of a van in an adjoining lane didn’t see the pedestrian and hit him, Jackson said.
The man, believed to be from Newport Beach, was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach where he died of his injuries, Jackson said. He has not been identified.
The van driver was not arrested but the crash remains under investigation, Jackson said.
