Re “Gains in Child Support Arena,” Jan. 9 editorial:
The Times claims that Orange County child support enforcement has recently grown to number more than 500 positions and, yet from this staff, payments are received in only 19% of county cases.
For some reason, The Times states that the Family Support Division is moving in the right direction.
A better direction would seem to be to stress a father’s commitment to his children by allowing him to continue in a real and significant role.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported that 85% of joint custody fathers ordered to pay child support in 1991 actually did so.
Here we have a method to keep fathers involved with their children and simultaneously have the county save the expenditures required to fill up to 400 unnecessary positions.
