Trojans Check Out Incoming Recruit

Members of the USC and UCLA basketball teams were at Pauley Pavilion on Monday night taking in the high school games at the Martin Luther King Holiday Challenge. One of the Trojans’ incoming recruits next season, Westchester’s David Bluthenthal, scored eight points against Compton Dominguez.

In sharp contrast to UCLA, which sticks primarily to a six-man rotation, USC uses 10 players. Despite the rash of injuries this season, USC reserves have scored 39% of the team’s points. The substitutes have outscored the starters in three games.

USC continues to rely heavily on three-point shooting, scoring 33% of its points from behind the arc. The Trojans are shooting 38.3% from three-point range and are on pace to break the school record of 37.8% set during the 1991-92 season.

Update--The USC game starts a run of four consecutive home games for the No. 9 Bruins. No current Bruin has lost to the Trojans and no current USC player has competed in a close game against UCLA. On the Bay Area trip last weekend, Kris Johnson scored 43 points and grabbed 22 rebounds, the best two-game performance of his career. He leads the Bruin regulars in three-point shooting percentage and free-throw percentage. For only the fifth time this season, USC will have all of its players available to play. The Trojans, defeated by Stanford and Cal last weekend, last defeated UCLA during the 1993-94 season. The Trojans also will be looking for their first victory over a top-10 team, having lost four such games this season. The Trojans are 3-7 on the road, where they have lost their last six.
