A South County-based anti-gun movement that rose from the 1994 shooting death of Mission Viejo student Matthew Blek has found a home.

Growing out of the residence of the slain college student’s parents, Charlie and Mary Leigh Blek, Orange County Citizens for the Prevention of Gun Violence recently opened an office at 25255 Cabot Road.

“This sends the message that we’ve got a job to do and we’re here to stay,†Mary Blek said.

The office was funded by a $50,000 grant from the California Endowment, a private foundation in Woodland Hills.

The group formed after the death of Blek, 21, at the hands of a handgun-wielding teenager in Manhattan.

Since the tragedy, his family has traveled from Sacramento to Washington to fight for legislation against the sale of handguns.

Today, more than 20 volunteers form a cadre of speakers for the organization; the office will give them an operating base and provide a clearinghouse for information on gun violence.
