Even as reports of more killings were published, the government “categorically rejected†a call by the U.S. for an independent inquiry into the continuing slaughter blamed on Islamic insurgents. But in an apparent contradiction, the U.S. State Department said that a human rights investigator was still a possibility. State-run radio reported that attackers killed 62 civilians and wounded 48 in new massacres in Relizane province.
