Giant Auto Outlet Gets the Green Light
AutoNation USA, a nationwide chain of huge used-car outlets, has won unanimous approval to build a site off the Ventura Freeway in Oxnard.
The City Council voted 5 to 0 Tuesday night to clear the way for a 1,000-car, 20-acre site. The company, which is building several Southern California sites, hopes to open the Oxnard location this year, officials said.
The Florida-based chain’s fixed prices and massive selection have been compared to Wal-Mart by auto industry analysts. And despite fears it could drive some traditional used-car dealers out of business, city officials praised the chain as a major new retail development.
They estimate Oxnard could receive as much as $1 million a year in sales tax revenue from the business.
AutoNation will be built next to the Oxnard Factory Outlet stores. The project represents another step in the city’s effort to build up retail development near Rose and Rice avenues, said Steve Kinney, president of the Greater Oxnard Economic Development Corp.
“It’s another piece of that picture that’s attracting people from many miles away to the community,†Kinney said.
